Triangulation!
(Using 3 seismogram recordings from the same area)
1. Reading seismogram:
seismic waves animation
S - P time interval (seconds)
Amplitude (tallest wave, mm)
2. Converting S - P interval (seconds) into Distance (KM)
3. Using this information to show distance from seismograph location to possible epicentre location.
Draw radius around seismograph locations.
4. 3 distances = 3 circles (radii) = earthquake epicentre!
Using a NOMOGRAPH to find magnitude (Richter scale) of the earthquake from our seismograms!
Richter Scale and TNT
In Class Paper and Pencil Activity: (San Francisco Earthquake) You're a seismologist today!

When you are finished:
Try out the Richter Scale
Above activity online:
Virtual Earthquake how to find epicentre
Even more indepth online activity (Complete with sounds and you can map your own radii!) good practice!
Virtual earthquake (more advanced)
Concentrate on "Main Activities" -- "Epicentre and Magnitude" (in the Menu)
